Government urged to promote more practical learning in schools

The world is evolving, yet Ghana’s education system remains heavily focused on theory. Director of Royalton International School, Mrs Judith Oteng-Marfo, is calling on the government to shift greater attention to practical learning as a key part of the educational curriculum.

Speaking at the school’s graduation ceremony, she stressed that hands-on activities develop critical thinking and brainpower in children. Her school already runs an Abacus program in partnership with Brainiac Abacus, giving pupils a solid foundation in mental arithmetic and problem-solving.

“It’s a brain development program and allows children to think critically,” she said. “The government must take proactive steps to integrate more practical work into the curriculum so that children learn by doing, not just memorizing,” she said.

She added that from early childhood, students should be exposed to the practical benefits of education rather than relying solely on theory. This, she believes, will produce a generation better equipped for the modern world.

She also urged parents to invest more in their children’s education for a stronger future.

At the event, Royalton held an Abacus competition to inspire learners, with the top prize being a full year of free tuition. The winner, Grade Six pupil Caleb Oti-Tweneboah, beat strong competitor Frema, a Grade Four pupil known for her Abacus skills.

Caleb shared that he nearly lost hope during the contest but pushed through with determination. Adding that Frema is highly skilled in Abacus, which made him even prouder of his victory, as it motivated him to work harder and strive for the top position in every competition.

“Never give up on your dreams. Even if the challenge feels too big don’t stop, keep going because no matter what you’re strong in your own ways,” he encouraged his peers.

Royalton International School, which has now expanded from nursery and primary to include junior high, says it will continue to promote practical learning while urging the government to make such approaches a national priority.

The school is also inviting parents to enroll their children at Royalton International School, where they will receive training to help them grow into the best version of themselves.
