The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed government’s dedication to fulfilling President Mahama’s pledge to improve teacher welfare through the provision of adequate housing.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, November 19, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry is reviewing proposals from major funding institutions to support a nationwide teacher housing programme.
“As you will recall, in the manifesto we promised teacher bungalows. I am reviewing a paper and a proposal from the District Assemblies Common Fund. With support from the DACF, GETFund, GSOP, and teacher pension funds, we intend to provide 50,000 housing units for teachers,” he stated.
Mr. Iddrisu added that the DACF Administrator recently travelled to Morocco to engage potential partners for the project.
“What we need now is to identify the funding mechanism for the delivery of these units,” he explained, stressing that infrastructure development and improved teacher welfare remain central to government’s broader education sector transformation agenda.
