Executive Director of the Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), William Nyarko has attributed the poor leadership in Ghana to the chieftaincy institution.
He says Ghanaians have failed to demand accountability from the leadership because they are revered as chiefs thus probing their activities are seen as a taboo.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Current Affairs Show, Burning Issues on Wednesday about leadership and governance in Ghana, Mr. Nyarko said the culture of presenting items to a chief when visiting has metamorphosed to public sector workers demanding gift whenever they render a service to an individual.

His comments come after President Akufo-Addo sacked Boakye Agyarko as Energy Minister but failed to give reasons for his sack.
The Minister of Energy, Mr. Boakye Agyarko has been relieved of his position, following the controversy surrounding the review of the AMERI power deal.
A press statement signed and issued by Mr. Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency on Monday August 6, said President Akufo-Addo by a letter dated August 6, 2018, “relieved the Minister of Energy, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, of his position, with immediate effect.”

“President Akufo-Addo has asked Mr. Boakye Agyarko to hand over his office to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, who will act temporarily as Minister of Energy, until a substantive appointment is made,” the statement said.
Mr. Nyarko said Ghanaians demand to know in detail the reasons that required the boot out of Mr. Boakye Agyarko from post since the release did not spell out the details.
He advised Ghanaians to keep protesting whenever they are not satisfied with any decision that is taken by leadership.
Meanwhile, a governance and leadership expert of the Chippewa Leadership College in Wisconsin, USA Dr. Enoch Opoku Antwi believes the followership in Ghana has done more harm than good.
Speaking on the same show, Dr. Opoku Antwi says about 80% of the citizenry are followers whilst only 20% are leaders.

The followers according to the governance and leadership lecturer are supposed to check the leadership and put them on track but have failed to do so.
He further asserted that, delegates have also contributed to the failure of the state due to lack of critical friends in both political discourses to criticize from within.
Dr. Opoku Antwi said “My book on corruption in parliament titled, Political Leadership and Followership in Africa, denotes followership as the problem crippling the development of Africa”.
