The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has urged unemployed young people to be proactive in their search for work, stressing that job opportunities do not automatically come to individuals simply because political promises were made.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr Nukpenu explained that government pledges on employment are largely aimed at creating an enabling environment for jobs to thrive, rather than placing every citizen on the government payroll.

He argued that the expectation for the state to provide salaried employment for everyone promotes a misguided mindset that discourages initiative, creativity, and self-reliance.

“Our duty as a party is to engage the masses and explain government opportunities to them. The political promise on jobs was to create an enabling environment, and that environment is being created. The question is, how are you taking advantage of it?” he asked.

According to Mr Nukpenu, while opportunities emerge when the right conditions exist, individuals must make deliberate efforts to identify and seize them.

“When you sit at home and say that because we promised you jobs, the job must come to you, it will not happen. You must go out and seek the job. That perception that everyone needs a job where the government pays them every month is a deceptive mindset,” he said.

He also urged government appointees to improve communication around policies and ongoing programmes, noting that weak messaging often fuels frustration and misunderstandings about the progress being made.
