The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has inaugurated a new community fire volunteer squad in Jacobu, Amansie Central, as part of efforts to curb the annual surge in bushfires and protect farmlands during the dry season.

The team, known as the Jacobu Fire Volunteer Squad, was formally commissioned by Divisional Officer Grade I (DOI) Richard Sarbah, who underscored the urgent need for more communities in the district to develop similar volunteer groups.

He noted that the dry season remains the most vulnerable period for farmers, with bushfires destroying crops, grazing lands, and property every year.

Addressing the newly inaugurated squad, DOI Sarbah stressed that fire volunteers play a critical frontline role in responding to local fire outbreaks before they escalate.

He further appealed to farmers and residents to adopt safer practices and avoid activities that commonly spark fires, such as burning crop residue, smoking out game during hunting, and cooking on farmlands without proper precautions.

The Ghana National Fire Service also encouraged the Amansie Central District Assembly to provide continuous support and resourcing for the volunteer squad to keep them active and responsive during emergencies.

In recognition of their commitment, GNFS presented certificates to trained volunteers who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to protecting farmlands, preserving vegetation, and promoting food security in their communities.

Authorities say the new squad is expected to significantly strengthen fire prevention efforts in Jacobu and nearby communities as the harmattan intensifies.
