The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has inaugurated 100 newly trained fire volunteers to strengthen community-level wildfire prevention and response in the Afram Plains.

The volunteers, drawn from 21 communities across the Kwahu Afram Plains North and South Districts, were officially unveiled at a ceremony led by ADO I Alexander Brown Aidoo of the Donkorkrom Fire Station.

The initiative was implemented in partnership with Bees for Development Ghana, a long-standing collaborator in wildfire mitigation and environmental protection in the area.

The training equips community members with skills in early detection, suppression, and safe firefighting practices to reduce the annual destruction caused by bushfires.

Eastern Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Timothy Osafo-Affum, praised the volunteers for their dedication, describing their role as vital in safeguarding lives, farmlands, and property. He urged them to remain committed as the region approaches the peak of the dry season, when wildfire risks are highest.

The inauguration featured a parade by the volunteer groups, the presentation of basic firefighting tools, and solidarity messages from stakeholders emphasising the importance of community participation in wildfire management.

The GNFS stated that the deployment of these volunteers is part of broader efforts to strengthen local resilience and curb the growing threat of bushfires across the Eastern Region.
