Ghana’s health infrastructure expansion took another step forward on Wednesday, February 18, as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) provided updates on the construction of the new Cardiothoracic Centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The Fund said significant progress has been made since the sod-cutting ceremony in January, describing the development as part of a broader effort to transform the country’s specialised healthcare delivery.
According to GMTF, what began as a groundbreaking ceremony just six weeks ago is already taking shape. “In January, we were here breaking ground at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. A month and two weeks later, the progress is evident,” the Fund noted, highlighting visible advancements in the foundational works at the project site.
The update followed a technical working visit aimed at assessing the groundwork and ensuring that key infrastructure decisions are made early and decisively. “This was a technical working visit to assess the groundwork and ensure key infrastructure decisions are taken early and decisively, as we work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health to align expertise, planning, and execution,” the statement read.
The visit was led by GMTF Administrator Obuobia Darko-Opoku, alongside her team and Mr Adann Benjamin Diaz, Chief Executive Officer of ADB Ghana Medicals Limited.
They were joined on site by Mr Fred Effah-Yeboah, Director of General Administration at KATH, and Mr Kwame Sarfo, Head of Capital Investments and Projects at the Ministry of Health.
The team provided critical technical insights to guide major decisions around power capacity, utilities, and structural planning. Emphasising the complexity of the project, GMTF noted that laying a strong foundation remains the most demanding phase.
“The toughest work is in the foundation. Once the foundations are complete, the full scale of this intervention will become clear,” the Fund stated.
The Cardiothoracic Centre is expected to significantly enhance specialised cardiac and thoracic care at KATH, strengthening Ghana’s overall health landscape.
