The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has dismissed claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction are not being monitored.
The Authority said the claims made by Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, are false and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana.
In a statement, the GMA said its surveillance system remains fully operational and is used to monitor vessels within Ghana’s maritime domain.
The Authority said it continues to deploy maritime domain awareness tools to maintain 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.
According to the GMA, the system also supports the monitoring and protection of offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
The Authority explained that it follows standard operating procedures to track vessels, verify their identities and assess compliance with relevant requirements.
These measures, it said, are aimed at ensuring safety, security and environmental protection within Ghana’s maritime domain.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue,” the GMA stated.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests.
It urged the public to disregard the claims and rely on official communications from the Authority for accurate information on maritime surveillance in Ghana.
