GMA demands apology from Health Minister; slams dismissal of TTH CEO

-

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Adam Atiku, describing it as unjust and an abuse of power.

In a statement, the association said the development was disturbing, lamenting the unfair treatment of doctors at the Emergency Unit during a recent visit by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The GMA revealed that the head of the Emergency Unit has faced threats and cyber-bullying, putting his safety and mental health at risk.

The GMA has declared its support for the affected medical personnel and urged public officials to exercise accountability and restraint.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and an abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the statement read in part.

The GMA has also condemned what it described as a “media audit” of the recent patient death at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), warning that it violated patient confidentiality, exposed the hospital to potential legal repercussions, and created bias in public opinion.

In response to these concerns, the GMA is demanding an unqualified apology from both the Minister of Health and the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini, for what it has termed “unwarranted attacks” on the hospital staff.

Furthermore, the GMA has called on the management of TTH to ensure that due process is followed in addressing the matter, prioritize the safety of staff, and provide psychological support for those affected by the incident.

The GMA reiterated its dedication to addressing the long-standing challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system and cautioned that it is actively monitoring developments and will offer guidance to its members as necessary.
