The Girl Child Coordinator for the Asutifi South Education Directorate in the Ahafo Region, Faustina Xorla, has expressed deep concern about the negative impact of menstrual hygiene challenges on the education of schoolgirls in the Seinchem Circuit.
Speaking to Adom News during the presentation of 384 sanitary pads and 400 exercise books to students from seven junior high schools, Madam Xorla revealed that many girls are forced to use unsafe alternatives such as cement paper, rags, and toilet rolls during their menstruation due to their families’ inability to afford sanitary pads.
The donation, made by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, benefited students from Manhyia, Sunkwa, Seinchem Islamic, Kwaku Nyumah, Adwumaye, Seinchem R/C, and Seinchem D/A Junior High Schools.
“These unhygienic practices not only endanger the health of the girls but also cause them to miss school, affecting their academic progress,” Madam Xorla stated.
She commended the DCE for his timely support, noting that the donation would help alleviate the challenges many girls face during their periods.
DCE Benjamin Donkor, in his remarks, emphasized that his office is committed to promoting menstrual hygiene in the district.
He added that beyond the provision of pads, the girls also received education on menstrual health—a critical step toward long-term change.
“This initiative is not a one-time gesture. It has become a permanent part of my administration’s support for girls’ education and well-being,” he assured.
