A 7-year-old Class 2 pupil, Jenissi Afena Amponsah Kyeremeh, has reportedly lost her life during a stampede at a graduation ceremony at Golden Child Academy in Berekum, Bono Region.

Speaking to Adom News, the mother of the deceased, Beatrice Afena, expressed deep anger and grief over the school’s handling of the situation.

According to her, she was only informed of the incident through a phone call from her sister and rushed to the Holy Family Catholic Hospital, where she found her daughter dead.

“My daughter lost her life, and yet the school continued with the celebration as if nothing had happened. Till now, no official from the school has visited my family to explain or show support,” she lamented.

On behalf of the school, Prophet Alex Amankona, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), told reporters that the school cannot confirm any death until the hospital issues an official statement.

Some concerned parents, however, criticised the school’s management, accusing the proprietor of insensitivity for allowing the programme to continue despite the incident and injuries to other children.

Investigations into the tragic event are expected to commence in the coming days.
