The President of the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF), Seth Ocran, has announced plans to redesign and regulate chop bar operations across the country as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s tourism economy.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new National Executive Council of GHATOF, Mr Ocran emphasised that local food centres play a critical role in shaping tourists’ experiences of Ghana.
“You cannot promote the Black Star Experience if our chop bars lack basic sanitation and customer service standards,” he stated.
According to him, GHATOF will lead a nationwide redesign of chop bars, ensuring they are equipped with proper and affordable sanitation facilities, including decent toilet systems that meet public health and tourism standards.
As part of the reforms, GHATOF plans to roll out a Tourism Brigade across all 261 districts in Ghana. The brigade will conduct quarterly inspections to ensure compliance with hygiene, safety and service standards.
“These inspections are not to punish operators, but to raise standards and protect Ghana’s tourism brand,” Mr Ocran explained.
In addition, GHATOF will intensify customer service training and certification programmes for chop bar operators, chefs, tour operators, event vendors, transport operators and frontline security agencies.
The initiative aligns with GHATOF’s broader vision under the theme, “Collaborative Tourism Partnerships for a Sustainable 24-Hour Tourism Economy – The Black Star Experience.”
