GHATFRAM urges gov’t to include traditional medicines in NHIA drugs list

SOT 1 Okogyeabibiduro Nana Kwadwo Obiri

The Ghana Association of Traditional Healers (GHATFRAM) has appealed to the government to include traditional medicines in the NHIA’s list of approved drugs.

Okogyeabibidruo Nana Kwadwo Obiri, the Association’s General Secretary, said about 65% of Ghanaians rely on traditional medicine for their healthcare needs.

He believes integrating herbal treatments into the NHIA scheme would save the country millions of dollars spent on importing pharmaceutical drugs, while also providing patients with more affordable options.

Speaking at Kwahu Nkwatia during a four-day training programme for herbal practitioners, Nana Obiri stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in preparing and applying herbal medicines to ensure their safety and effectiveness.

He further called on the government to support GHATFRAM in establishing a modern training centre to equip practitioners with new skills and improve the quality of traditional healthcare delivery.
