Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and widely recognised as Ghana’s tallest man, has died.
His death was announced on Monday, July 27, 2026. He was 33.
Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (2.23 metres), Awuche became known across Ghana because of his extraordinary height and his courageous battle with a rare medical condition.
He was diagnosed with acromegaly, a form of gigantism caused by the excessive production of growth hormone, a condition that led to severe health complications over the years.
The illness significantly affected his mobility and left him battling a serious skin condition on one of his legs as well as curvature of the spine.
In recent months, Awuche had been admitted to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for specialist treatment after his condition worsened.
Doctors were assessing him for surgery, with the possibility of a leg amputation among the options being considered to improve his health and quality of life.
His treatment attracted national attention after businessman and philanthropist Dr. Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers & Planners, stepped in to cover his medical expenses.
The support offered renewed hope to Awuche and his family as he began what was expected to be an intensive medical journey.
However, he succumbed to his health battle.
His family is yet to announce the cause of death and funeral arrangements.
