Retired FIFA referee, Joseph Wellington, has expressed disappointment in Ghanaians who claim Ghana does not support its own referees.

According to Mr Wellington, no club or referee in Ghana can be compared to those in England because they have better structures.

He believes in terms of officiating, Ghana is ahead of Gambia; but because the West African country supports their referees, that’s how come the likes of Papa Bakary Gassama has become one of the finest.

“Our referees are doing their best. Hearts of Oak cannot be compared to Chelsea for now; no club from Ghana can be compared to any club in England because of their structures.

”In the same way, refereeing in Ghana cannot be compared to those of England so all of us as a body and as stakeholders have to support the cause of refereeing.

“There are mistakes in the game, footballers make so many mistakes but if a referee makes a mistake, it turns to something else.

“The structures that helped the likes of Mike Dean [referee] in England to get to where he is are absent here in Ghana,” he told Asempa FM in an interview.

The Ghana Football Association’ four-day integrity seminar for referees selected to officiate in the 2019/2020 season is ongoing at the Pentecost Convention Centre at Millennium City, Kasoa.
