Ghana, US deepen ties with focus on visa reforms, World Cup cooperation

Ghana and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following high-level talks in Washington.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was hosted at the U.S. Department of State by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, and Senior Bureau Official for African Affairs, Nick Checker.

Discussions focused on exploring new avenues for cooperation while strengthening existing partnerships, particularly under frameworks such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The meeting also touched on preparations towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting opportunities for collaboration in sports and related sectors.

Mr. Ablakwa commended the United States for introducing enhanced visa processing arrangements at its Embassy in Accra, noting that the improvements have significantly reduced waiting times for applicants.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation and strengthening ties for the mutual benefit of Ghana and the United States.
