Ghana Tourism Authority welcomes Olu and Olori of Warri to Oguaa Fetu Festival

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has warmly welcomed His Majesty, the Olu of Warri Kingdom, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and Her Majesty, Olori Atuwatse III, as they joined the people of Cape Coast to celebrate the historic Oguaa Fetu Festival.

The visit of the Nigerian royals is seen as a step toward strengthening cultural ties between Ghana and Nigeria, while also highlighting the shared heritage of the two nations.

Speaking at the welcome ceremony, GTA Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto emphasized the significance of the occasion.

“This royal visit is more than ceremonial—it is a bridge that deepens the cultural bond between Ghana and Nigeria. The Oguaa Fetu Festival is one of our most cherished traditions, and hosting Their Majesties here is a proud moment for us all,” she said.

Houadjeto reaffirmed GTA’s commitment to supporting the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, to ensure a successful festival.

“The Ghana Tourism Authority will continue to assist in hosting dignitaries and to preserve the cultural essence of the festival for future generations,” she added.

Celebrated annually on the first Saturday of September, the Oguaa Fetu Festival, also known as Fetu Afahye, marks the end of a devastating plague in Cape Coast’s history. Today, it remains a vibrant tradition that honors ancestors, fosters unity, and drives economic activity through tourism and trade.

For the people of Cape Coast, the presence of the Olu and Olori of Warri added a special dimension to this year’s festivities, underscoring the power of culture to connect nations.
