The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Ghana will implement a nationwide free education policy for all Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) beginning January 1, 2026.
According to the Minister, the initiative forms part of President John Mahama’s broader vision to make education fully accessible and inclusive for all citizens, particularly those living with disabilities.
Haruna Iddrisu further disclosed that feeding allowances for students with disabilities will be increased significantly, from GH¢8.00 to GH¢15.00 per day. To facilitate this, the Ministry will amend the GETFund Act to allow for the immediate adjustment.
Additionally, financial support for feeding will rise from GH¢65 to GH¢100 per year following the amendment.
The Minister made these remarks on the floor of Parliament during discussions marking the International Day of Persons With Disabilities.
He also hinted at other upcoming interventions, including the provision of assistive devices to support students with disabilities in schools across the country, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable education system.
