The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that a high-level Ghanaian delegation has travelled to Latvia to engage authorities regarding the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.
In a press release dated February 19, 2026, the Ministry said the visit is part of ongoing efforts by the Government of Ghana to seek justice for the late student, who died under unusual circumstances while studying in Latvia.
The delegation was led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and included forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, Ghana’s Ambassador, and consular officials from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin. The family of the deceased, represented by Nana Agyei’s mother and aunt, also participated in meetings with Latvian authorities.
Discussions were held with key officials, including Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Minister for the Interior, Police Chiefs, State Prosecutors, and investigators handling the case. Latvian authorities confirmed that investigations are active and ongoing. Due to Ghana’s high-level engagement, the probe is now directly supervised by Latvia’s Interior Ministry, with fresh investigators appointed to ensure credible outcomes.
Authorities in Latvia welcomed additional submissions relevant to the case. Guided by the Ghanaian delegation, the mother of the deceased submitted a formal statement to the appropriate authorities as part of the official investigative record.
The Government of Ghana has also requested that the final investigative report be made available to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family, a request that Latvian authorities reportedly raised no objection to.
The Ministry assured that the government remains fully committed to truth, transparency, and justice in the matter. It added that regular engagement with Latvian authorities will continue, and all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues will be utilised to ensure due process is followed.
Officials of the Foreign Affairs Ministry are maintaining close contact with the bereaved family and will provide consistent updates to both the family and the public. The Ministry further urged the public to avoid speculation that could undermine ongoing investigations.
“The Government of Ghana remains absolutely committed to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all Ghanaians at home and abroad,” the statement concluded.
