Black Stars goalkeeping coach Daniel Gaspar believes Ghana have the strongest group of goalkeepers in African football as they prepare for a crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia.
Ghana host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT, knowing they need a positive result after losing their opening Group C fixture.
Carlos Queiroz’s side began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké last Thursday, while The Gambia opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Somalia.
The results leave Ghana at the bottom of the group heading into the second round of matches.
Speaking to Ghana Football Association media during Saturday’s training session, Gaspar praised Lawrence Ati Zigi, Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang, saying he had no doubts about the quality of the trio.
“Fortunate to be back, very grateful to be here. We have three outstanding goalkeepers,” Gaspar said.
“In my opinion, I have no doubt it’s the best assembly of goalkeepers in Africa, and I believe that they believe that and we continue on our mission.”
Ati Zigi brings international experience to the squad, while Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Asare has continued to attract attention following his emergence with the national team.
Anang completes the three-man goalkeeping group as Ghana look to respond to their defeat in Côte d’Ivoire and get their qualification campaign back on track.
Gaspar has recently returned to the Black Stars set-up and will work with the goalkeepers as Ghana seek to avoid another setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 AFCON.
The Black Stars missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, ending a run of more than two decades of consecutive appearances at the tournament.
The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
