Ghana could co-host World Cup in future – Sports Minister

-

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says he is optimistic that Ghana could one day co-host the FIFA World Cup with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

With the 2026 World Cup set to be hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, and the 2030 tournament planned for Morocco, Spain and Portugal, Adams believes West Africa could be the next region to stage a joint World Cup.

“They [FIFA] are beginning to adapt a number of nations hosting together, so maybe, who knows, the next one could be Ghana, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire coming together to also host the World Cup — and it will be good,” he said.

He noted that the three countries already have a solid foundation for staging major international competitions, referencing Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire’s recent investments in hosting the Africa Cup of Nations.

“I believe that we, together with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, who have already invested quite a lot because they hosted AFCON not too long ago… we can also make a strong case to host,” Adams added.

Ghana last hosted a major event in 2024 when it staged the delayed 2023 African Games, while Côte d’Ivoire successfully hosted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
