Ghana Card to soon serve as student ID – NIA boss

Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Kwaku Deku

The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Kwaku Deku, has revealed that the Ghana Card will soon be used as a student identification card across the country.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Deku said the initiative forms part of efforts to make the Ghana Card an all-purpose national ID.

“As we speak, your Ghana Card number already serves as your SSNIT number, NHIS number, and GRA TIN number. What we are now proposing is for it to also become a student ID, so schools won’t issue separate IDs since the NIA already has the required data,” he explained.

He added that the card’s chip has a storage capacity of 148 kilobytes, making it capable of housing multiple datasets for integration across institutions.

Mr Deku further disclosed that discussions are ongoing with stakeholders, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), to make the Ghana Card acceptable for driver licensing, pending a government directive.

“The DVLA requires a government directive to approve the use of the Ghana Card instead of issuing a driver’s license. The Ghana Card is a multi-purpose card, and its chip has approximately 148k of storage capacity, which can house all the necessary data within the system. We are currently in talks to promote a common agenda to the government for this integration,” he said.
