GH¢1 fuel levy is not a necessity; deepens burden on Ghanaians – Economic Fighters League

-

The Economic Fighters League has strongly criticised the government over the recent imposition of a GH₵1 levy on every litre of fuel, popularly referred to as the “Dumsor Levy”.

In a statement, the League described the move as a regressive policy that betrays the public’s hope for meaningful change and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

Although President Mahama has acknowledged the levy as tough but necessary, the group insists it is a deliberate choice that unfairly burdens ordinary Ghanaians.

“This fuel tax is not a necessity. It is a choice. And it is the wrong choice,” the statement declared.

The Fighters also condemned the process leading to the levy’s implementation, claiming it was “cooked up behind closed doors,” passed without public consultation, and wrapped in patriotic rhetoric—an approach they labelled “cynical manipulation.”

They contrasted the situation with post-war Japan’s transparent recovery efforts and criticised the government for using distraction and “strategic freebies” to shift public attention from the levy’s impact.

The statement further accused Ghana’s economic system of leaning too heavily on taxing citizens while failing to leverage the country’s natural resources effectively.

The group also called out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what they described as opportunistic behaviour, accusing them of adopting activist language without genuine commitment.

“That they would hijack the slogans of the people only confirms what we have long said: the enemy is not just the parties, but the system itself.

The people of Ghana do not need another tax. We need a new economic order,” the statement concluded.
