GFA Vice President Mark Addo dismisses claims that Ghana football is dying

Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mark Addo, has firmly rejected claims that football in Ghana is on the decline.

His comments follow the overwhelming turnout at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday for the 2025 President’s Cup.

In a thrilling encounter, Asante Kotoko came from behind to defeat their fierce rivals, Hearts of Oak, 2-1 to claim the prestigious trophy.

Speaking after the match, Mr. Addo—who was present at the stadium—emphasised that the enthusiasm and passion displayed by fans prove that local football is alive and thriving.

“The President’s Cup went extremely well. From the look of things, people still enjoy watching good football, as displayed in the Kotoko-Hearts encounter. For me, the notion that our football is dead has been quashed,” he said.

Mr. Addo also turned attention to the upcoming 2025/26 football season, which kicks off in September.

“Overall, we’ve concluded the season well and are looking forward to the new season, which begins in September,” he added.
