Former Ghana striker Augustine Ahinful has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to stop appointing coaches who manage local clubs while also overseeing national teams.
Ahinful raised concerns about the negative impact of this dual role on the development of a competitive national team, stating that coaches should be fully dedicated to their national duties.
In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Ahinful emphasized the importance of having national team coaches who are solely focused on their responsibilities and receive regular salaries from the GFA.
“National team coaches must not be allowed to coach club sides. If we allow that, I am sorry to say that corruption will rise in our game,” he said.
Ahinful questioned how effective such arrangements could be, asking, “If a coach is handling a club side and he is tasked to announce a squad, how will he be able to go around and scout for the right players?”
He urged the GFA and the government to address the issue, advocating for a system where national team coaches are fully employed and paid by the GFA.
“This system will not work, and so the government and the GFA must work on this to solve the situation. The GFA must be able to employ coaches and pay them every month as they work for the various national teams, but the system where a coach is coaching a club and will have to leave his team and come to a national team camp is not the best,” Ahinful added.
