The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is preparing to roll out a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League in a bid to raise standards and retain talent in the domestic game.
The initiative, approved by the GFA’s Executive Council, is expected to be presented to Congress for final ratification ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Speaking to Starr FM, the GFA’s Director of Communications, Henry Asante Twum, confirmed the development, stating: “The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO.”
The introduction of a base salary requirement across all top-flight clubs is aimed at ensuring fair compensation for players, many of whom currently earn modest wages that have made it difficult for clubs to retain top talent.
The league has faced persistent challenges with player exodus, as athletes seek more financially rewarding opportunities abroad. By guaranteeing a minimum wage, the GFA hopes to improve working conditions, enhance player morale, and make the local league more competitive and attractive.
The policy is seen as a significant step toward professionalising the domestic league and reinforcing the foundation of Ghanaian football.
