The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting today, April 7, 2026, with the appointment of a new Black Stars head coach expected to top the agenda.
The meeting follows the dismissal of the 50-year-old manager after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria national football team and Germany national football team in last month’s international friendlies.
The results intensified concerns over the team’s preparedness and overall direction ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With less than three months to the tournament in North America, pressure has mounted on the GFA to stabilise the team’s technical leadership.
A number of experienced coaches, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos, have been linked to the role. The Executive Council is expected to assess the options and narrow its choice during today’s meeting.
Following the meeting, the GFA is expected to engage government stakeholders before making an official announcement.
The Association has indicated a preference for a coach with proven international or elite club experience.
Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has suggested that a final appointment could be confirmed by Monday, April 13.
Speaking to Channel One TV Ghana, he said: “If by this weekend we don’t announce the coach, then by Monday at the latest we should be able to present our new Black Stars coach.”
Once a new head coach is appointed, preparations are expected to resume in May, with a friendly against Mexico national football team lined up, followed by another warm-up match against Wales national football team on June 2.
Ghana will compete at its fifth FIFA World Cup finals in North America, having been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
