The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has called for swift justice following the death of Berekum Chelsea striker Dominic Frimpong, who was killed in a violent armed robbery attack on Sunday night.
Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC, lost his life after the team bus was ambushed on the Bibiani–Goaso road as the squad returned from their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex, which ended in a 1–0 defeat.
According to reports, armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle, forcing players and officials of Berekum Chelsea to abandon the bus and flee into nearby bushes in a bid to escape the attack. Several members of the travelling party sustained injuries during the chaos.
The injured striker was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the GFA expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating blow not only to Berekum Chelsea but to the entire Ghanaian football community.
“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole,” the Ghana FA said.
The Association said it is working closely with Berekum Chelsea, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
It also urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, adding that it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities as probes continue.
The incident has reignited longstanding concerns over player safety and security during league travel, with several Ghana Premier League clubs in recent years reporting similar highway attacks while on official duty.
