The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany. The decision was confirmed by the GFA Executive Council after consultations with key stakeholders, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the national team’s leadership.

The 73-year-old arrives with an extensive résumé in international football, having coached several national teams and elite clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United. His managerial career has also taken him to Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

Queiroz’s World Cup experience is seen as a major asset for Ghana’s preparations. He previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and took charge of Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

He is expected to begin work immediately, with early priorities including assessing the playing squad, finalising his technical team, and shaping preparations for the tournament.

The new coach will meet the Black Stars squad next month during a friendly against Mexico, before another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, set for its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, will compete in Group L at the 2026 tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
