Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has opposed to calls for the dismissal of Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo.
Addo, 49, is on the cusp of guiding Ghana to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup, with the senior national team just a point away from qualification.
The Black Stars are set to conclude their qualifying campaign with a home fixture against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium, following their emphatic 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic.
Despite the team’s impressive run and the historic milestone within reach, questions about Addo’s future have dominated discussions.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams, in a recent interview, said that while Addo has benefited from some fortunate circumstances and hinted that government will determine the coach’s future at the appropriate time.
Speaking to Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, Afriyie argued that dismissing Addo at this critical juncture would be ill-advised. Instead, he called for the appointment of a qualified assistant coach to bolster the former FC Nordsjaelland manager’s efforts.
“Sacking Otto Addo at this point is not the right decision,” Mr Afriyie said. “We should get a more qualified coach to support Otto Addo.”
Kick-off for the decisive encounter against Comoros is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
