The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region, which claimed 15 lives, including 11 children.
According to the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), the accident occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025, when an overloaded boat capsized mid-crossing.
The victims included children aged two to fourteen, along with four adults. Four passengers survived.
In a statement, the Ministry described the tragedy as a “national heartbreak,” mourning the loss of so many young lives whose “dreams and potential were tragically cut short.”
The Ministry extended condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Kete Krachi community, assuring them of continued support through relevant government agencies.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected families,” the statement said, while commending the Ghana Maritime Authority and emergency response teams for their prompt intervention and the swift launch of investigations.
The Ministry further underscored the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety rules on inland waterways, emphasizing the compulsory use of life jackets and adherence to anti-overloading measures.
It also urged closer collaboration among government agencies, transport operators, and local communities to promote accountability and prevent future disasters.
