GCTU unveils state-of-the-art computer lab to empower future app developers

To enhance hands-on learning, Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has commissioned a modern computer laboratory designed to boost practical training in mobile computing and mobile application development.

The newly furnished lab is part of the university’s broader commitment to equipping students with job-ready digital skills.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, emphasised in an interview with Adom News the university’s readiness to develop industry-prepared graduates through practical and theoretical education.

The Department of Computer Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering was among the first to utilise the facility, as students sat for their first semester exams in Mobile Computing and App Development.

This initiative tested their ability to create functional Android applications, an essential step toward building real-world software solutions.

A Systems Analyst and lecturer at GCTU, Mark Kofi Amoani Mensah, explained that by the end of the course, students will be capable of publishing their own Android apps on platforms like the Google Play Store.

These apps can range from gaming and e-commerce to productivity tools for businesses, opening up entrepreneurial opportunities for graduates.

The university is encouraging Senior High School (SHS) graduates to consider enrolling in its programs, which offer a balanced blend of theory and practice tailored to current market demands.

After the exams, some students expressed appreciation for the new facility. One student, Jonas, noted that businesses today are looking for people who can demonstrate their skills, not just what they know. This facility puts us on the right path.
