A boat accident on the White Volta has left several people feared dead after clashes in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District forced residents to flee.
The vessel, carrying people escaping renewed violence near Gbenyiri, reportedly capsized along the Dinie-Tuonbo section of the river.
According to the Savannah Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mahama Zakaria, six passengers were rescued while several others remain unaccounted for.
“Our immediate concern is to save lives and recover those still missing,” Mr. Zakaria explained.
Authorities cautioned that the casualty figure could rise as many displaced residents remain stranded at Dinie, waiting for safe passage.
The White Volta has witnessed frequent boat mishaps over the years, often blamed on overloading, poor safety practices, and the absence of life jackets.
