GBA President urges law practitioners to be true custodians of the law

The President—and first female President—of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey Esq., has called on legal practitioners to uphold and embody the principles enshrined in the law, describing the legal profession as a noble calling rooted in moral and ethical standards.

Speaking to Adom News at the 19th Biennial Delegates Conference of the Methodist Youth Fellowship held in Accra, she emphasized the historical and symbolic ties between the legal and clerical professions.

“The legal profession is a noble one. It was born out of the clergy. If you look at our dressing as lawyers and compare it to the clergy, you’ll see a clear similarity,” she noted.

“What this means is that if the clergy are custodians of the Bible, then we, as lawyers, are custodians of the law. We must ensure that in our work, in our daily lives, and in our counsel to the public, we uphold and reflect what the law stands for.”

She further stated, “If lawyers truly live up to their calling, it will brighten every corner of this nation. We must give sound advice, speak truthfully, and ensure that everything we do aligns with the law and justice.”

Efua Ghartey also encouraged Ghanaian youth—especially those in the Methodist Church—to live with integrity and godliness, positioning themselves as ambassadors of Christ.

“Youths are the future of this country. It is important that they lead with Christ and live lives grounded in integrity and godly values,” she said.
“Be a light to others—your character and choices should inspire those around you.”

The 19th Biennial Delegates Conference of the Methodist Church Ghana Youth Development Ministry and the Accra Diocese Youth Fellowship was held under the theme: “Discipleship: Growing to Christian Maturity.”

Also speaking at the event, the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Methodist Youth Fellowship in the Accra Diocese, Emmanuel Acquah, encouraged Christian youth to remain resilient in their faith, especially in difficult times.

“These are challenging days, but we must stand firm,” he said.
“As Christian youth, we are called to persevere and reflect Christ in our actions, no matter the situation.”
