The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has clarified public concerns surrounding billboard demolitions across the region, stressing that the exercise is not being directed by the Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo.
In a press release, the Council said recent media reports suggesting the Minister ordered selective demolitions were inaccurate.
The ongoing activities, it explained, are part of a broader regulatory and standardisation exercise under the mandate of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, coordinated by a technical committee responsible for regulating outdoor signage.
The Council noted that district assemblies have the legal authority to regulate outdoor advertising within their jurisdictions, including issuing notices of non-compliance and removing structures that fail to meet safety or permit requirements.
Officials emphasised that these actions are guided by existing regulations and public safety considerations—not directives from the Regional Minister’s office.
The statement added that industry stakeholders, including advertising sector representatives, have been involved in discussions with the technical committee from the early stages of the exercise.
This collaborative approach is intended to ensure transparency, fairness, and improved urban planning and safety standards.
Reaffirming the Minister’s position, the release said she remains committed to lawful processes, accountability, and constructive engagement with stakeholders. The Council urged the public and media to present the exercise within its proper regulatory context, stressing that enforcement is institutional, not personal.
The clarification comes amid increased public debate over billboard removals in parts of Greater Accra, with authorities encouraging dialogue through official channels as the exercise continues.
