The IGP’s Special Anti-Galamsey Task Force has seized seven excavators in a raid on illegal mining camps in Ahiwren, a small community in the Bekwai municipality of the Ashanti region.
The raid follows a request made by the chief, Nana Osei Boateng.
The illegal miners, believed to be backed by key personalities in the town, were mining close to the St Joseph’s Senior and Technical High School and the Ahwiren Methodist Primary and Junior High School.
After an initial raid and seizure of three excavators, the miners regrouped and brought in fresh excavators to mine in the same area.
Led by DSP Karim Mahama and ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the team conducted a follow-up operation and seized four more excavators.
The miners managed to escape arrest.
All the excavators have been transported to the Regional Police Training School, Patasi, Kumasi, for safekeeping and further investigation.
