Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called for a renewed national commitment to fight illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, following the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.

In a statement, Dr. Agyemang said that if the victims were on their way to confront the menace of illegal mining, then the fight “must now assume the same urgency with which we respond to national crises.”

He emphasized that beyond paying tributes, the tragedy should serve as “the country’s great awakening. We owe them more than tributes; we owe them commitment and action.”

Dr. Agyemang, who described Dr. Boamah as his senior at Pope John Senior High School, prayed for the souls of all the victims and expressed hope that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
