Galamsey: Enough of the talking, act now – TUC General Secretary tells President

The General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate and decisive action to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to him, the time for talks and stakeholder engagements is over, and what Ghanaians expect now is concrete action to stop the destruction of the country’s water bodies and environment.

Mr. Ansah made the call during a tour of the Agona Kwanyarko Water Works, the Kyebi Treatment Plant, and some galamsey sites at Anum Apapam in the Eastern Region.

He warned that the TUC would soon take a firm stance if the government fails to address the menace, emphasizing that continuous dialogue without results is no longer acceptable.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Engineer Paul Akpanya, revealed that the Kyebi Treatment Plant has been shut down for the past two months due to severe pollution and damage caused to the Birim River by illegal mining activities.
