The Kontihene of Akyem Kotoku, Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyere II, has voiced strong disapproval of the chief and elders of Amuana Praso over their alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
His remarks follow a petition submitted by the youth of Amuana Praso to the Akyem Kotokumanhene, Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, raising concerns about the environmental destruction caused by galamsey activities.
The youth alleged that despite ongoing mining in the area, their community has seen little development, while their environment continues to suffer severe damage.
Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyere II urged the youth to avoid violence and instead seek lawful means to demand accountability and progress for their community. He stressed that while frustration is understandable, order and due process must be maintained.
Illegal mining has long plagued the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, with allegations that some chiefs are either actively involved or have turned a blind eye to the practice.
In response, the Akyem Kotokumanhene has formed a task force to clamp down on galamsey and restore integrity to the traditional authority.
