Galamsey: 99 excavators retrieved, 208 suspects arrested so far

The Ghana Police Service continues its fight against illegal mining activities across the country.

In March and April 2025, the Service conducted a series of anti-galamsey operations in various communities affected by illegal mining.

The special operations covered Samreboi along the Tano River, Wassa Dunkwa, Tigarikrom, and surrounding communities in the Western Region.

So far, the Police have arrested 58 suspects—comprising 50 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals—in connection with illegal mining and retrieved 85 excavators and three bulldozers.

Similar anti-galamsey operations have been carried out by various Regional Police Commands as follows:

  • Western Regional Police Command: Arrested 19 suspects and retrieved three excavators and three pump-action guns, among other exhibits.

  • Upper West Regional Police Command: Arrested seven Ghanaian suspects and retrieved 11 changfangs and three motorbikes, among other items.

  • Eastern South Regional Police Command: Arrested 24 suspects, including one Burkinabe, and retrieved five excavators, three single-barrel guns, and one pump-action gun, among other exhibits.

  • Western Central Regional Police Command: Arrested 85 suspects—76 Ghanaians and nine Chinese—and retrieved 11 excavators and other items.

  • Eastern North Regional Police Command: Arrested 15 suspects, including one Chinese national, and retrieved four excavator control boards, nine monitors, and one pistol, among other exhibits.

In total, 208 suspects have been arrested. The Police have also retrieved 99 excavators, three bulldozers, four pump-action guns, three single-barrel guns, one pistol, 11 changfangs, and several other exhibits, including vehicles, motorbikes, tricycles, generators, gold detectors, and pumping machines.

All suspects are being processed in accordance with the law.
