New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and Board Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has confirmed the shutdown of Accra-based Asaase Radio following directives from the National Communications Authority (NCA).
In a Facebook post, Mr. Otchere-Darko explained that the shutdown was due to a delayed licence renewal. According to him, the station’s management was supposed to renew its licence in December 2024, not October 2024 as previously indicated.
He noted that Asaase Radio was set to celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, June 14.
Asaase Radio is among 62 stations cited by the NCA for operating without valid authorisation or breaching regulatory requirements.
The NCA’s crackdown targets stations with expired licences, those that failed to begin operations within the authorised timeframe, and others that have not fulfilled financial or technical obligations tied to their authorisation.
The enforcement is part of a phased compliance effort following a recent audit of the broadcasting sector.
