The Ga West Municipal Assembly has ordered the temporary shutdown of the Amasaman China Mall after part of the structure collapsed on Sunday, December 28, raising safety concerns.

The incident reportedly caused extensive damage to goods within the affected section of the facility, while two individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

In an interview with Accra-based Channel One News, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga West, John Desmond Sowah Nai, said preliminary assessments point to structural weaknesses as the cause of the collapse.

He explained that initial findings by the Municipal Security Coordinating Council (MUSEC) informed the decision to halt activities at the mall.

“MUSEC took a decision to temporarily halt operations. We have asked China Mall to stop operations temporarily until further notice,” he stated.

Mr Sowah Nai assured residents and patrons that the safety of the public remains the Assembly’s top priority, stressing that the mall will not be reopened until all safety concerns have been adequately addressed.

He added that management of the facility will be required to fully comply with all recommendations arising from the MUSEC investigations before operations can resume.
