Funke Akindele opens up on emotional turmoil and seeking therapy

Celebrated Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about her emotional breakdown and journey to healing, revealing how therapy helped her navigate the darkest period of her life.

Speaking candidly on Chude Jideonwo’s talk show, the Jenifa’s Diary star recounted the moment everything became too much to handle—the pressure, the grief, the silence.

After losing her mother and enduring intense personal battles, Funke admitted that she hit a breaking point.

“I told myself, I can’t continue like this. You need to speak,” she shared, describing how societal expectations had conditioned her to bottle things up in the name of being strong.

Though she had always believed in the importance of therapy, she never sought it—fearing judgment or being misunderstood.

“I thought people would talk about me. People would know my business,” she confessed.

But as the emotional weight became unbearable, she took the brave step and finally spoke to a therapist—a decision she said marked a turning point.

“Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better,” she said, expressing relief at finally being heard without judgment.
