The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has commended the government for suspending some fuel taxes but raised concerns about the real impact of the relief on ordinary citizens.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, she described the move as a positive step that shows the government recognises the hardship Ghanaians are facing.
However, she argued that such interventions often fail to translate into tangible benefits for the majority of citizens.
According to her, while fuel price reductions may be reflected at the pump, many Ghanaians rely on public transport and do not directly benefit directly from such changes.
“Fuel tax suspension is good, but if transport fares and market prices don’t come down, ordinary Ghanaians will not feel the impact,” she added.
She pointed out that transport unions and market traders often do not reduce their prices in response to fuel cost reductions, limiting the overall impact of government interventions.
Janet Asana Nabla stressed that government must go beyond introducing relief measures and ensure that these benefits are felt across the economy.
She called for stronger regulation and enforcement to ensure that reductions in fuel prices lead to lower transport fares and reduced cost of goods and services.
She emphasised that relief policies should reach the grassroots and positively impact the daily lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
