Residents of the Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities in the Eastern Region are expressing growing frustration over the worsening condition of the Somanya-Kpong Highway, following what they describe as the prolonged abandonment of the project.
Local youth and advocacy group Kloma Hengme have issued a strongly worded statement, criticising the lack of progress on the road, which they say has become increasingly dangerous for motorists, schoolchildren, traders, and the general public.

According to the group, the road—though short—is a critical stretch that was incorporated into the broader Nkurakan-Trom road project, but work stalled after the contractor reportedly withdrew due to delayed payments from the government.
They lamented the road’s deteriorating condition, citing thick dust, deep potholes, and poor drainage as factors that are affecting both safety and livelihoods in the area.
Efforts to engage Municipal Chief Executives of Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo, they say, yielded only verbal assurances with no clear timelines for resuming work.
Following a prior meeting, Kloma Hengme issued a four-week ultimatum for authorities to facilitate the contractor’s return. That deadline expired on July 3, 2025, with no visible signs of progress.
To express their displeasure, the group has formally notified the Ghana Police Service of plans to hold a peaceful demonstration on July 24, 2025. The protest will begin at the Somanya Roundabout and end at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly in Odumase-Krobo.
Kloma Hengme is calling on traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and residents across the Krobo region to unite and demand urgent action on the highway and broader infrastructure development in the area.
