What was supposed to be love has turned into torment for Adwoa Mensah, a mother of three, who now says she is trapped in a web of spiritual bondage, domestic abuse, and drug addiction.
Adwoa recounts meeting a man who showed her affection at a time when she felt vulnerable and lonely. Despite already having three children, she gave in to his proposal. “I thought he was my helper, someone who would understand me,” she said.
But the relationship soon took a disturbing turn. According to her, the man persuaded her into entering a blood covenant—an act that sealed their bond in a way she now regrets.
“He made me promise with blood. He told me to stop drinking alcohol, and I did. But after that, I began to feel chained to him in a way I cannot explain,” Adwoa recounted, her voice breaking.
She now believes the man has used spiritual charms to keep her bound, insisting that he is not her kind of man, yet she feels helplessly tied to him.
“Anytime I try to leave, it feels like something drags me back. I am not myself anymore,” she added.
Beneath the spiritual fears lies another dark battle—drug abuse. Adwoa admits that in her attempt to numb the torment, she turned to drugs. But the relief is temporary. “The drugs numb me, but when it wears off, the pain and fear return even stronger. I want to stop, but I can’t,” she confessed.
She revealed that she has now ventured into another substance, which she calls “tinker.” Her addiction, she says, has already affected her children. “I am pregnant again for him after having an eleven-year-old child with him. The baby has stopped breastfeeding because of the drugs I take,” she admitted tearfully.
A visit to her family home revealed that Adwoa actually comes from a respectable household, but she abandoned the comfort of her family to follow the man, choosing instead to live with him in an uncompleted building.
Adding to her pain, she disclosed that the man physically abuses her. “He beats me every day,” she said, pointing to scars on her body.
The situation has left her isolated and broken. Neighbors say she often looks distressed and restless, with some attributing her struggles to addiction rather than purely spiritual forces. But Adwoa remains convinced that both the covenant and charms have worsened her condition.
“I am suffering. I don’t sleep well. I feel like my life is slipping away. I need help. I don’t want to die in this bondage,” she cried in a desperate plea.
The Obra crew, who first heard of Adwoa’s case, have promised to follow up and uncover the full story behind her claims—both the spiritual bondage and her battle with drugs. Until then, her situation serves as a haunting reminder of how easily the search for love and comfort can spiral into abuse, addiction, and despair.
