The Northern Regional Police Command has released details following the arrest of three suspects who allegedly concealed a large quantity of restricted pharmaceutical drugs and a firearm in a vehicle’s spare tyre.
The suspects—Jabuni S. Mohammed, Alidu Abdul Samed, and Abdul Aziz—were apprehended near Diare, a suburb of Savelugu, during a routine night patrol operation on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
According to the police, the incident began when Jabuni, who was driving a Nissan Hardbody pick-up with registration number GN 2812–20, refused to stop at a checkpoint along the Tamale–Bolgatanga highway.
Officers gave chase, prompting Jabuni to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes. He was arrested shortly after.
Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, the patrol team discovered a deflated spare tyre packed with 1,399 blister foils of Tafrodol 120mg, a restricted pharmaceutical drug. A loaded pistol was also found concealed inside the vehicle’s headrest.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the two other suspects, Alidu and Abdul Aziz, who were intercepted on an unregistered motorbike believed to be en route to meet Jabuni.
All three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be processed for court in the coming days.
The police say they are treating the case as a serious threat to public health and security and have reaffirmed their commitment to combating the illegal trade and distribution of pharmaceutical substances, especially in the northern corridor.
