The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of four people in connection with the kidnapping of three Chinese nationals from a Ghanaian vessel.
The CID Director-General, DCOP Lydia Ayaako Donkor, revealed this at a press conference on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The trio, comprising a Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer, were reported missing in a suspected kidnap case after pirates attacked the Ghanaian vessel Mengxin 1.
The incident occurred in Ghanaian waters on the evening of Thursday, March 27, 2025, at approximately 5:53 PM, when seven armed individuals boarded the vessel and fired warning shots.
DCOP Donkor explained that the Chinese nationals were transported and later abandoned in a remote location in Nigeria.
According to her, the arrests followed collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and relevant agencies.
She added that investigations are still ongoing, with security agencies in both Ghana and Nigeria working together to arrest additional suspects and uncover the wider network behind the kidnapping.
