Former West Ham United boss Slaven Bilić has moved to the front of the race to take over as head coach of the Ghana national team, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) steps up efforts to appoint a successor ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The search for a new manager follows the departure of Otto Addo, whose second stint in charge ended after a disappointing run of results, including friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.
The 57-year-old Croatian has reportedly held talks with the GFA, which is said to regard him as a strong candidate to guide the Black Stars through a key rebuilding phase.
He is, however, not alone in the frame. Former Portugal and Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz, ex-Portugal manager Fernando Santos, and Tom Saintfiet are also being considered, with Bilić currently understood to be the leading contender.
According to local reports, the GFA is weighing up a short-term arrangement of around four months for the next appointment, a move seen as a cautious approach amid financial uncertainty and performance pressures.
Officials are said to be reluctant to commit to a long-term deal, mindful of the potential cost implications should a dismissal become necessary after the World Cup.
There is also growing speculation that Hervé Renard could become available after the tournament, a factor believed to be influencing the FA’s preference for a temporary solution before pursuing a more permanent appointment.
The decision-making process has been further slowed after the GFA Executive Council meeting on April 10 failed to reach a conclusion, with only a limited number of members present and the association president joining remotely.
Financial limitations are also understood to be shaping discussions, with reports suggesting a proposed salary package of around $50,000, a figure considered unlikely to attract elite-level candidates.
An official announcement is expected in the coming days, with Ghana scheduled to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by another warm-up match against Wales on June 2.
The Black Stars, who will be making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Ghana begin their campaign on June 17 against Panama before facing two heavyweight tests against England and Croatia.
