Five divisional chiefs (Mpakanfo) of the Akuapem Traditional Area in the Eastern Region have banned the queenmother of the area, Nana Afua Obuo Nketia II, from attending traditional council meetings.

In effect, Nana Afua Obuo Nketia ceases to be recognised as the queenmother of Akuapem.

A libation was poured and a white sheep was slaughtered last December, to signify the end of her reign during a traditional council meeting of the chiefs and queenmothers of Akuapem.

Divisional chiefs

The meeting was attended by the Krontihene, Osahene Boafo Ansah II, the Adontenhene, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, who is also the Aburihene, the Gyasehene, Oyeeman Osim Kwatia II, who is also the Amanokromhene, the Nifahene, Osuodumgya Otutu Ababio V, who is also the Adukromhene and the Benkumhene and chief of Larteh Ahenease, Osabarima Asiedu Okoo Ababio III.

All five divisional chiefs signed a resolution, with copies delivered to the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs and the Akuapem Traditional Council.

Abusive utterances

The Krontihene, Osahene Boafo Ansah, who read the resolution with the support of his colleagues, said that for close to six years, the queenmother, Nana Afia Obuo Nketia, had refused to attend meetings and, at the same time, used abusive language that had retarded the progress and development of the area.

That, he indicated, made outsiders feel unsafe in the area.

Osahene Boafo Ansah stated that the queenmother attempted to stop this year’s Odwira Festival celebrations, as well as previous ones, which, according to the Krontihene, was a taboo because in Akuapem, a queenmother had no powers over Odwira Festival celebrations.

The queenmother, he further stated, paraded herself as the omanhene of Akuapem, thus rendering Akuapem as a banana state in the eyes of all right-thinking persons.

Osahene Boafo Ansah told the gathering that, despite such absolute misconduct by Nana Afua Obuo Nketia, the Abusuapanin (Head of clan) refused to call her to order to preserve the image, credibility, and pride of the Nketia Royal Family.

He said, in view of such circumstances and considering the safety of outsiders, the chieftaincy status, educational standards, and socio-economic outlook of the Akuapem Traditional Council, they had to part ways with Nana Afua Obuo Nketia to save Akuapem from further disgrace.

The Omanhene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, was present at the council meeting.
